You are currently viewing WHAT IS CBD? OUR BEGINNER’S GUIDE

The introduction of CBD has revolutionized the wellness industry. Over the past few years, the industry has expanded considerably, owing to the numerous potential health benefits of this cannabis compound. You’ve probably heard of it by now as a natural supplement or wellness product that potentially improves your health and is great for your body. But what is CBD, and how can you use it? We’ve written this comprehensive guide for you to find out more, so keep reading!

What is CBD?

CBD stands for “cannabidiol” – a compound derived from the hemp plant (a member of the Cannabis Sativa plant family). It is a natural cannabinoid that is found in the plant and is carefully extracted from the plant using various extraction techniques. At 1807 Blends, we use Supercritical CO2 extraction, the cleanest and purest extraction method currently available. But companies also use chemical solvents like ethanol, butane or propane – which we do not recommend. The more “natural” route may be more expensive, but as it is a product that interacts with your body, quality and purity is important.

When hemp or Cannabis comes to your mind, you might think of it as being a substance causing a “high.” However, CBD is 100% non-psychotropic and doesn’t give you any high. The substance in cannabis that causes a high is THC, which is present in negligible amounts in the hemp plant. In fact, Cannabidiol is said to inhibit the effects of THC, so you won’t get high from using products containing this cannabinoid. Beware of THC concentrations (if any) in such products however, and ensure products you use have minimal concentrations of THC if you are sensitive to this cannabinoid.

All CBD products on the market must comply with the recommended maximum level of THC (0.2% in many European countries and 1% for Switzerland) for them to be legal. We’ve made sure our Full Spectrum Cannabidiol products comply with European legislation, meaning they all contain less than 0.2% THC. So you don’t have to worry about getting high!

How Does Cannabidiol Work on the Body?

Our bodies contain a natural system called the “Endocannabinoid System” (ECS) that regulates many aspects like sleep, pain, inflammation and immunity. The endocannabinoid system contains endocannabinoids as well as endocannabinoid receptors that naturally occur inside the body.

This is where Cannabidiol comes into play! This natural cannabinoid has the ability to influence ECS receptors inside the body, according to studies. Research shows that this interaction may help our ECS to better regulate many processes in our body such as pain management and inflammations, insomnia or mood.

Moreover, Cannabidiol may also influence other receptors in the body like serotonin receptors and dopamine receptors.

Types of CBD Oils

If you’re new to Cannabidiol, skimming through the numerous types of products out there can become overwhelming. Here, we define the three main types of CBD oils, which should help you make a decision as to which one is best for you.

Full-spectrum Swiss CBD oil

Full-spectrum CBD oils contain all the compounds found in the hemp plant, including THC, terpenes and other cannabinoids like CBN and CBG. However, the THC concentration must not exceed the legislative limit in order for it to be legally commercialized.

The hemp plant contains over a hundred cannabinoids, and this Cannabidiol oil has all of them. It also contains terpenes and flavonoids from the plant. These substances enhance each other’s effects, giving stronger effects than those of the individual compounds alone. This synergy between compounds is called the “Entourage Effect”.

Full-spectrum CBD oil’s effects are therefore the most potent and effective. And the small amount of THC present in this oil is not enough to cause a “high”. However, depending on your dosage it may still show up on a drug test. Thus, if your job requires regular drug testing, it may be wiser to use a Broad Spectrum CBD oil or Isolate instead.

Broad-spectrum Swiss CBD oil

Broad-spectrum oil contains all the compounds found in the hemp plant except THC! It contains over a hundred cannabinoids, terpenes and fatty acids. You can therefore also benefit from the Entourage Effect and it can be a good option for those who want potent effects but don’t want any traces of THC in their system. It is however less natural than a Full Spectrum oil and additional processes are required to extract the THC from the oil.

CBD Isolate

CBD isolate is pure Cannabidiol. Usually, it has a purity of over 99%. The oil from the hemp plant is extracted and then goes through a number of processes to extract all other compounds and contaminants. As a result, you cannot benefit from the Entourage Effect, but it’s great for those who require very high doses of Cannabidiol. Epileptic patients for example tend to take Isolate, as since they require large doses, it is a cheaper alternative than a Full Spectrum CBD oil.

These are the three basic types of Swiss CBD oils that you can find out there. We always recommend starting with a Full Spectrum product due to the advantages and increased effectiveness it has compared to the other two types of products.

How to Use CBD

CBD products can be administered in many different ways, and each administration method has its own pros and cons. Let’s look at a brief overview of all the ways there are to use CBD.

  • Oral route – this involves using Cannabidiol pills, capsules, edibles, and gummies. You can also add CBD oil/tincture to your food or drink. With this oral method, it can take between 30 minutes to a few hours to show its effects and not all of it might get absorbed into your body after it’s digested. However, it’s an easy and great way to start for beginners!
  • Sublingual route – this route involves putting CBD oil or tincture under your tongue for a minute or two. This way, some of the CBD gets absorbed directly into your bloodstream and has more immediate effects than other oral methods.
  • Vaping – this involves the use of a vaporizer to deliver the heated Cannabidiol directly to your lungs, where it gets absorbed into your bloodstream. Although it is the fastest method to feel the effects, it is much more difficult to use the appropriate dosage when vaping, especially if using CBD flowers.
  • Topical CBD, i.e.: creams, oils, lotions or sprays that are applied directly to the skin. It can be used to treat superficial skin problems, inflammations or local pain.

These are the main methods of delivering Cannabidiol to your body. Pick the one that suits you the best! And remember that CBD oil can be used in any of the above methods.

CBD Dosage

Since we are all unique, there is no universal dosage that works for everyone. Hence, you need to figure out your ideal CBD dosage yourself. It’s best to start your experience with a low CBD dosage and then gradually increase it till you get the results you’re looking for. That being said, we did write a comprehensive guide about dosage which should be helpful, so check it out!

Factors to Consider Before Purchasing Cannabidiol

Before you head on to purchase CBD, make sure you keep the following points in mind:

  • Always purchase Cannabidiol from a reputable CBD shop or brand like 1807 Blends’ Swiss CBD Oil, which is organic, free of contaminants and Swiss Made.
  • Make sure you’re purchasing CBD oil, not hemp oil. Many brands falsely advertise hemp oil as CBD oil. Hemp oil is a lot cheaper and doesn’t contain any CBD. It’s good for cooking however!
  • Always ask for 3rd party lab test results when purchasing CBD from any brand! And if they’re not willing to show you, that’s a red flag.
