Cannabis sativa is the most common type of cannabis plant, although there are other forms of cannabis including Cannabis indica and Cannabis ruderalis. Of over 480 different compounds present in the plant, only around 66 are termed cannabinoids.

The most well known among these compounds is the delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), which is the main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. In Switzerland no strain can surpass 1%THC and in Europe 0.2%.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is another important component, which makes up about 40% of the plant resin extract.

CBD is cannabidiol a safe, non-intoxicating cannabinoid found in hemp. CBD is one of the two major cannabinoids found in cannabis plants. There are more than 100 minor cannabinoids also found in the hemp plant. Extractions combining CBD and minor cannabinoids, alongside terpenes, form to make what is known as Broad Spectrum CBD.

Because CBD in non-intoxicating, it is an appealing option for individuals seeking alternative remedies for everyday issues. According to the World Health Organization CBD is safe even at high doses.

In addition, the World Health Organization reviewed CBD and found it has therapeutic benefits for eighteen ailments ranging from inflammation, pain, anxiety, sleep and other conditions without disconcerting feelings of dysphoria.

CBD has demonstrable antioxidant properties and neuroprotective and neurogenic effects.

CBD has been available for centuries in the forms of hemp extracts; however, only until more recently has scientifically-sound research been conducted. Most studies are in early phases of research trials. While CBD is touted for many benefits, it is not a cure all. More advanced research is needed to determine proper benefits, formulations, dosing, side effects and interactions with other drugs.

Tetrahydrocannabinol THC has a psychoactive effect. It is one of the cannabinoids found on the cannabis plant. Under Swiss narcotics legislation, CBD flowers with THC less 1% are legal. Due to the low concentration of THC in our CBD flowers, you will not experience THC-related psychoactive effects like the “high” feeling.

The term hemp is used to describe industrial hemp, a type of cannabis that contains 0.3% or less THC content by dry weight.

Because the THC concentration is so low, it will not get you high.

Cannabinoids are compounds extracted from the cannabis sativa (hemp) plant. High concentrations of cannabinoids are found in the floral material, with the hemp plant producing high concentrations of the non-intoxicating cannabinoid, cannabidiol (CBD).

Beyond CBD there are 100+ other non-intoxicating minor cannabinoids found in the floral material of the hemp plant. Other cannabinoids include cannabichromene (CBC), cannabigerol (CBG), cannabinol (CBN), cannabivarian (CBDV), cannabidiolic-acid (CBDA), THCV (tetrahydrocannabivarian (THCV) and more. Like CBD, these minor cannabinoids also have varying levels of therapeutic benefit; however, more research is needed to determine their efficacy.

Cannabinoids, like CBD and those mentioned above, interact with receptors in the human body’s endocannabinoid system, as well as other systems within the body including our Adenosine receptors and Serotonin receptors.

No matter what condition you are trying to treat with CBD, giving yourself an adequate dosage is key.

Research has proven that CBD is a safe method to treat several indications.  CBD is non-toxic and presents zero risk of intoxication.

Your ideal dosage of CBD depends on a range of factors including body weight, body chemistry, the condition you are treating and the concentration of CBD in the product you are using.

Based on that, the recommendation is a step-up approach where you gradually increase the daily dose of CBD until the most desired results are reached. By using this method you are tailoring the amount of oil necessary to fit your needs.

This will help you better understand how to measure your dosage.

THE TEN = 1000mg of CBD /1 drop  3mg of CBD 

THE FIFTEEN = 1500mg of CBD/ 1 drop ≈ 4.5mg of CBD 

THE TWENTY = 2000mg of CBD/1 drop ≈ 6mg of CBD  

THE FORTY = 4000mg of CBD/1 drop ≈ 12mg of CBD

The effects of CBD can last for 6 hours so this process can be repeated 2 to 4 times a day as needed (a bottle contains ~320 Drops). 

The recently discovered (1988) Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is found in the human body’s Central and Peripheral Nervous System. The Endocannabinoid System is responsible for maintaining homeostatic action in the body, like mood, memory, appetite, thermoregulation, sleep and more.

The Endocannabinoid System consists mainly of neurons, receptors and endogenous cannabinoids that form the system. To date, the Endocannabinoid System comprises of CB1 and CB2 receptors. These receptors are attached to neurons and regularly receive endogenous cannabinoids.

However, unlike many systems within the body, endogenous cannabinoids are produced in an on-demand fashion and travel in a reverse manner, attaching to receptors on pre-synaptic neurons. The attachment of these endogenous cannabinoids to their receptors creates responses within the body that may balance feelings of mood, appetite, sleep and more.

These endogenous receptors can also receive phytocannabinoids like hemp-derived cannabinoids, that mimic endogenous cannabinoids and can serve as a supplement to our endocannabinoid system in times of need.

CB1 and CB2 receptors are considered to be receptors within the “Classical Endocannabinoid System.” Beyond these two receptors, other receptors exist and interact with cannabinoids but have not been officially adopted as cannabinoid receptors by the scientific community. These receptors include TRP and GPR55.

More recently, scientists have found that cannabidiol, or CBD, most commonly interacts with receptors and systems outside CB1 and CB2 receptors. CBD interacts with TRP, GPR55, Serotonin and Adenosine receptors.

TRP is a transient receptor potential channel. There are about 30 TRP channels within the body which regulated pain, temperature, vision, taste and pressure. It is likely that cannabinoids received through the skin interact with TRP channels, as well as, in some cases, CB2 receptors.

GPR55 is referred to as a G-coupled protein receptor. Alongside GPR55, GPR119 and GPR18, also interact with cannabinoids. Early research suggests that targeting this receptor may provide treatments for inflammation, pain and anti-cancer effects.

Serotonin receptors exist mainly in the gut, with 90% of Serotonin receptors present in this area. Like GPR55, Serotonin receptors are also G-coupled protein receptors. Serotonin receptors tend to influences various biological responses throughout the body including, mood, appetite, nausea, anxiety, cognition, sleep and more. Cannabinoids, like CBD, may interact with these receptors, particularly if ingested orally.

Adenosine receptors also receive cannabinoids like CBD. Four Adenosine receptors are found within the body. Each receptor is responsible for varying degrees of interaction. A1 and A2A are found within the central nervous system, working with the heart to regulate oxygen and blood flow. Both A1 and A2A also mediate the release of neurotransmitters like dopamine. In addition, A2A mediates inflammatory response within the body.

Conversely Adenosine receptors A2B and A3 are found in the peripheral nervous system and mostly are responsible for bodily processes like inflammation and immune function.

Cannabinoids, like CBD, interacts with systems like the Endocannabinoid System and receptors not found within the ECS like Adenosine, Serotonin, TRP and GPR55. Cannabinoids may turn on or off the functions of these receptors, creating enhanced or de-sensitized reactions in the body. This can aid in balancing the body’s imbalance.

Full spectrum, broad spectrum, and isolate refer to types of cannabis extracts, also called concentrates. The terms are intended to indicate the amount of plant-produced therapeutic chemicals present in addition to the primary
cannabinoids (THC and/or CBD); they are a shorthand way of conveying the diversity of bioactives in a given extract.

Full Spectrum means the maximum amount of helpful native phytochemicals are retained during extraction,
including THC. There are no precise regulatory definitions, but the goal is to remove extraneous lipids while retaining
an identical ratio of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids from the original plant source material. (This
can only be verified by testing the material before and after the extraction.) True full spectrum extracts are more rare than one might expect; most extractions lose significant terpenes and flavonoids during processing because they are much more volatile than cannabinoids.

Broad Spectrum applies to extractions which aim to retain a large complement of phytochemicals, but without
the THC. This allows for some Entourage Effect action without the stigma and intoxication that accompanies
cannabis’ most notorious component. Broad spectrum can also be created by either adding terpenes, flavonoids, and
minor cannabinoids to CBD isolate or by removing THC from full spectrum extract via distillation.

Isolate is the purest form of extracted cannabinoids (CBD), a crystalline powder with a purity of 99.9% of CBD
containing no other cannabis plant compounds. It is created through additional solvent processes after distillation.

It is the theory that cannabinoids have more favorable action when delivered with a higher proportion of native phytochemicals such as terpenes, flavonoids, and other cannabinoids. This manifests as both amplification of positive effects (efficacy) and modulation of undesirable ones (tolerability). The Entourage Effect is a way of saying that, when it comes to cannabis, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

The interactions between various cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids are staggeringly complex; it will take decades of research to parse them. Fortunately, terpenes and flavonoids have at least as much scientific research behind them as ahead of them. They are already common additives in many commercial processed goods, especially cosmetics, and of course, food – plants make tens of thousands of different terpenes alone. They can also be synthesized.

While CBD oil delivers a wide range of health benefits and its organic nature makes it safe to take with many medications, there are exceptions where CBD can interfere with them.

Even though the oil will not cause any severe or dangerous reactions when used with certain medications it can reduce or increase the effects of them by interacting with receptors throughout the body’s Endocannabinoid System (ECS) and by inhibiting the activity of cytochrome P450.

The evidence suggests that grapefruit warnings on medications should also apply to CBD as grapefruit interacts with cytochrome P450 in a similar way as CBD does. Therefore if your medications come with a grapefruit warning, you may be unable to use CBD.

The great thing about CBD and other cannabinoids is that there are few negative side effects associated with ingesting CBD oil products.

Some side effects that may arise include fatigue, nausea, low blood pressure or diarrhea. If you find that CBD oil has caused you symptoms of diarrhea, this normally resolves itself within 1 to 2 days of ingestion.

Your pets, very much like you, have an endocannabinoid system which means that they also have cannabinoid receptors thus they can experience the benefits of CBD in a safe way. Your pets will consume products with different potency and flavour therefore make sure to buy “The Bark”, “The Meow“ or “The Hoof” depending on your pet. 

CBD is simply one of the many treatments that you may want to consider for your pet, whether they are experiencing symptoms like separation anxiety or even more serious conditions for which nothing else has worked.

While you shouldn’t ever expect cannabis to be a panacea, CBD may be able to put your pet on the road to recovery for some illnesses or maladies.

Each pet is different and like humans CBD can affect them in different ways, this is why you should see what works best for your pet. CBD is what is known as a “biphasic compound” meaning that it has drastically different effects at low doses versus at high doses.

The bottom line is that more CBD is not always better. In the case of severe issues like seizures higher doses appear to be most effective. However, with something like anxiety, a low-to-medium dose will likely serve your pet much more effective.

So if you’re interested in trying CBD for your dog, cat or even your horse, remember these three rules:

  • First, consult with your veterinarian to ensure that CBD won’t interfere with pet’s current medications or health conditions.

If all is good, start with 0.5mg of CBD per every 4,5Kg ~10lbs of animal body weight, once or twice a day. 

CBD 3%   =  300mg of CBD / 1 drop  0.9 mg

CBD 5%.  =  500mg of CBD / 1 drop  1.5 mg

CBD 40% = 4000mg of CBD / 1 drop ≈ 12 mg 

Therefore for a 25kg ~ 55,5lbs dog you will need 3mg of CBD or ~ 2 drops of CBD 5% for dogs 

  • Generally, it is good to start small, and gradually increase the amount of CBD every week until you see the desired benefits. 
  • Observe your pet after giving them CBD.

CBD is itself non-toxic, and so the most important thing to keep in mind is that “overdosing” on CBD will not result in fatalities. The most commonly reported side-effects for CBD in animals are sedation and over-active appetites.

You can feed your pets the oil or if they are picky, you can put the oil in their food and let them ingest it that way. Either way works, see how your pet feels and see if they enjoy the benefits!

Seniors can benefit from CBD if you’re looking for a natural, plant-based product instead of pharmaceuticals. CBD may temporarily ease symptoms that commonly affect older adults.
